Mind-bending, mess-with-your-reality movies. Twelve Monkeys, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and their ilk. And anything genre-defying. Or does that just sound too highbrow?

OK, so this is a toughie because there are so many great directors. Can you select on the merits of only 1 film (F.F. Coppola is GOD!, Sergio Leone is Jesus)? How about a run of very good but similar films (Tim Burton, that's you) or a run of very good but different films (and Ridley Scott, that's you!). How about just being the director of some films I happen to like (stand up Mr Terry Gilliam). Well, after must debate, the final answer must be M. Night Shyamalan, in gratitude for making the film which made me realise that films were an art form in their own right.
